This piece is part of the collection "FIBER ALIVE" / A subspecies of brown bear, the California grizzly bear was accused by European settlers of being an aggressive one-ton bear that was picking off all their livestock and attacking people. The “golden bears” were hunted, poisoned, trapped, and used for violent entertainment due to these supposed threats. The last bear in the wild was spotted in 1924, a little over 100 years since the settlers started moving into bear territory without permission. New paleontological data prove the bears were mostly herbivores and were similar in size to the grizzlies in Yellowstone today. So don’t believe them when they say “it was THIS BIG!”
