The Vexed Mists: Culture and Cosmology
Mixed Media Artwork by Jorie Jenkins

A remote region within a vast natural realm, the Vexed Mists are comprised of several smaller ecosystems, including the foggy peat bogs of the Dillydell, the ever shifting Walking Isles of Moul, the swamp hives of the Wasp People, the reed cities of the Egrettu clan, and the Mangroves of the Ta’me people, the frog folk. The petrified city of Twiin, on the southern borders of the marsh, provides shelter for the Hummingbird (‘Accappappa’) people. The darkest reaches of the Vexed Mists are almost impossible to access, and have been ruled for generations by the elusive and malevolent Salamander King.

Each of these ecoregions depends on the monsoons, tidal systems and aquifers that feed into their expansive bogs and marshes. Human beings have largely ignored these lands, due to difficult navigation, the overabundance of toxic plant life and swarms of persistent, stinging gnats. But the inhabitants of this ever-changing realm are grateful that Man’s impact has remained minimal.

Part archeologist, part linguist, artist, musician, and storyteller, creator Jorie Jenkins first illustrated the world in her imagination solely for her own reference, but she was encouraged to share the visual art that seemed to tell many stories. Weaving history, myth, fantasy, science, and the conflicts of our own reality into a tapestry of alluring depth, the artist intends to further expand an imagined world, and make it accessible, palpable and powerful. The bog culture represented in this collection is a fraction of the entire realm yet to be revealed.
